Let’s Learn Together
Primary and Post-Secondary Schooling
Albert Einstein said, “Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death,” and Lloydminster agrees. From the tiniest tot to a seasoned citizen, there are a number of places and spaces to learn, grow, and explore when you’re living in Lloydminster. For the toddler set, check out the range of pre-school options including pre-kindergarten programming through Lloydminster Catholic and Public School Divisions plus Doodle Bug Playschool, Southridge Playschool and Kindergym Society. There is also church programming at First Lutheran Church and First Baptist Church. When the littles aren’t so little and they’re ready to head off to the big schools, you’ll discover a range of options for their education. Lloydminster Public School Division, Lloydminster Catholic School Division, and Ecoles Sans Frontiers offer fulsome education for children as young as pre-kindergarten right to grade 12 graduation.
Once your primary education is behind you, you may seek the next step in your journey: post-secondary studies. Lloydminster is home to two formal options: Reeves College and Lakeland College. At Reeves, students can explore a range of one-year certificates and diplomas in a fast-tracked environment designed to get students into the workforce. You’ll find technical training in areas like Medical Office Reception, Law Assistant, Graphic Design, and more.
Lakeland College has two campuses, one in Lloydminster, AB, and one in Vermilion, AB. Each offers bachelor’s degree programming, diplomas, and certificates. However, it is important to remember each community campus specializes in their own areas. On the Lloydminster campus, students are exposed to the School of Business (with bachelor’s degree, diploma, and certificate programming), University Transfer, Heavy Oil Operations Technology (HOOT), and more. In addition to student life, Rustlers Athletics focus on volleyball, basketball, soccer and a newly introduced women’s hockey team. Head east to Vermilion and you’ll discover the School of Agriculture, Interior Design Technology, Environmental Sciences, Emergency Training Centre (think: Fire School), and more. In Vermilion, Rustlers compete in cross country running, rowing, rodeo, and curling. Additional offerings include General Education Diploma (GED), night classes, and special interest courses. For a full listing of Lakeland College’s offerings in the current academic year, check their website.
There are several adult learning opportunities in a range of disciplines. Lloydminster Learning Council Association offers short-term classes, programs, and sessions in the areas of English as a Second Language (ESL), conversational language, and computer literacy, to name only a few. Legacy DIY, located downtown Lloydminster, offers hands-on classes and evening sessions in special interest areas such as welding, glass blowing, and more. Lloydminster Museum + Archives offers another option for continuous learning and enjoyment, with classes such as pottery, painting, and movement. For full details on each organization’s offerings, connect with them through the contact information in the listings section.
