Sport enthusiasts, unite! When you’re in the Border City, you’re certain to find a game to enjoy — whether as a spectator or participant. Lloydminster and area is home to some of Canada’s most celebrated talent. In fact, Beckie Scott (Canada’s more decorated cross-country ski racer) hails from Vegreville, AB, Braden Holtby (NHL goaltender) was raised in the region, and relative newcomers to the NHL, Kale Clague and Ty Smith, with the Montreal Canadians and New Jersey Devils, respectively, used to call Lloydminster home…to name only a few.
If you adore the feel of the sunshine on your face as you enjoy a cool beverage, may we suggest taking in a good ol’ ball game? Lloydminster is home to a number of junior, men’s, and ladies’ baseball, softball, and slo pitch teams that make it easy to root, root, root for the home team. For those who prefer the pace of the pitch, take a look at the list of soccer games hosted each fall by the Lakeland College Rustlers male and female teams. These elite athletes often battle at VLA Fields and are certain to impress with their talent and teamwork as they challenge other college level teams. Come springtime, head to the soccer fields to watch the kiddo and teens play while you take in some fresh air.
The Border City loves football, so here you’ll find passionate, dedicated fans for high school league play for both the Holy Rosary Raiders and Lloydminster Comprehensive High School Barons. These games are often loud, packed, and full of throngs of screaming fans, so come prepared with a thermos full of hot coffee and scarf around your neck for a cool autumn night to remember.
If the comfort of the great indoors is more your speed, you’re in for a treat. Volleyball, badminton, basketball, and futsal league games and tournaments often call Lloydminster home as we have a very sports orientated community. For water sports, Bioclean Aquatic Centre is the stage for swim meets, synchronized swimming competitions, and more. A relative newcomer to Lloydminster’s athletic landscape is cheer. Cheer Force Jets is certain to entertain with novice, prep, and elite cheer teams flipping, twisting, and pyramiding right before your very eyes.
For the classic hockey enthusiast, you’re in luck. Lloydminster has always loved the ice, and there are numerous junior, senior, AAA, and Junior A leagues active and thriving in Lloydminster that prove there’s always room for more fans. A few teams to cheer for: The Lloydminster Bobcats, Lloydminster PWM Steelers, and the newly added AFJHL, Lakeland College Kings Energy Group Rustlers team, to name a few.
