Onion Lake Cree Nation, Canada’s only border sharing reserve can be discovered 50 kilometres north of Lloydminster. The renowned Onion Lake powwow is hosted each year in July, and features hundreds of dancers, contests, and attracts individuals from a vast area. In addition to the annual powwow, Onion Lake is home to the Border Chiefs, a hockey team which competes in the North Eastern Alberta Junior B Hockey League. Onion Lake First Nation also played host to the Saskatchewan First Nation Summer Games, a multi-day special event featuring over 4,000 athletes representing their communities, reserves and tribal councils. This Cree Nation is also home to the thriving Onion Lake Business Development Corporation, an organization whose main objectives include strengthening First Nation employment.
